Excellence in the delivery of compassionate, timely, and state-of-the-art health for patients with liver disease is the primary focus of our Liver Team at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Our Liver Transplant Program is the most active in the region, and has shorter than average waiting times and better than average patient outcomes when compared to national averages.

In 2011, the Liver Transplant team performed 91 transplants for patients. In 2012 our team continued to increase utilization of donor livers by completing the region's first split liver transplant.

Our multidisciplinary team consists of highly trained Hepatologists, Liver Transplant Surgeons, Interventional Radiologists, Therapeutic Endoscopists, Pathologists, Oncologists, Nurse Practitioners, and nurse coordinators dedicated to caring for patients suffering from Liver Disease. Our team of specialists have extensive experience in caring for patients with Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, fatty liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, drug-induced liver disease, genetic and metabolic liver diseases such as Hemochromatosis and Wilson's Disease, and autoimmune liver diseases such as autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. In addition, our team works side by side with oncologists caring for patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) to increase treatment options and optimize survival.

Patients may contact our Liver Treatment Center for initial referral, evaluation and treatment recommendations.  A transplant hepatologist will then make recommendations and decide if a formal Liver Transplant Evaluation is needed. As the major academic medical center in the Kansas City area, we have the most experience in caring for patients with liver disease.  Our team will be happy to consult with your primary care physician and other referring physicians to maintain a team approach to your treatment.
